In 1989, the British Council of Churches published a collection of essays with an arresting title: The Forgotten Trinity.  The authors of these essays lament the neglect of the doctrine of the Trinity in the modern Church.  To be sure, the Trinity is occasionally referred to in the Church such as the baptismal ritual or the benediction.  But beyond these specific rituals, very little attention is given to the doctrine itself.  Indeed, the Trinity has become a little more than a theological appendage in many evangelical churches today.

But the doctrine of the Trinity can never be seen as an optional extra.  Its neglect or forgetting has serious consequences for the life of the Church.

On 25 September 2021, the Ethos Institute for Public Christianity, in collaboration with eight seminaries, organised a conference on "The Triune God" to examine the significance of the doctrine of the Trinity.  The papers that were presented at the conference are published in this volume under the Ethos Engagement Series.

The speakers at this conference - Dr Tan Seng Kong, Rev Dr Edmund Fong, Dr Leonard Sidharta and Rev Dr Lewis Winkler.

Speaker Profile:

Dr Tan Seng Kong is a lecturer in Systematic and Spiritual Theology at the Biblical Graduate School of Theology, Singapore. His recent publications include chapters in the Oxford Handbook on Jonathan Edwards (OUP, 2021) and Reformed Dogmatics in Dialogue: The Theology of Karl Barth and Jonathan Edwards (Lexham, 2022).

Rev Dr Edmund Fong is a lecturer in Theology, Hermeneutics and Presbyterianism at the Trinity Theological College, and an ordained minister with the Presbyterian Church in Singapore.  He worked as an engineer with the Public Utilities Broad before his theological studies in Sydney, and has since participated actively in the pastoral and teaching ministries at Adam Road Presbyterian Church.

Dr Leonard Sidharta joined the Singapore Bible College in 2020.  He studied Theology and philosophy at Reformed Evangelical Seminary and Calvin College, and got his Ph.D. at Purdue University (USA). Dr Sidharta served as the coordinator of Chinese ministry at Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Indiana, USA and was actively engaged in various ministries at other churches. 

Rev Dr Lewis Winkler is an ordained minister of the Evangelical Church Alliance (USA) since 1996.  In 2006, he moved to Singapore to teach theology, church history, and ethics at the East Asia School of Theology.  He was a lecturer of systematic theology at the International School of Theology and a visiting teacher in ethics at BIOLA University (USA).
